From Glitz and Glam to Repairing Lifting Equipment
“It feels amazing when you can follow your interests and make it your daily job. I love fixing things!”
“Before I joined A-Plant, I had no previous experience in the lifting or construction industry. In fact, I was a Hairdresser and Teacher Trainer for over 10 years, but I fancied a change of career. I spotted a job vacancy for a Driver at A-Plant’s Burton depot and jumped at the chance to apply.
Fixing in the blood
“It was during my initial job interview that my interest in fixing equipment came to light. My Grandad has been a Mechanic all his life and I’ve always enjoyed working with him at weekends, tinkering in the garage fixing cars. I got talking about this during my interview and I was asked if I would ever be interested in following this interest up vocationally as a Fitter. This immediately sparked my interest and I was excited about what the company could offer me.
“I was originally recruited as a Driver but my Manager and colleagues recognised my interest in repairing and maintaining equipment. I was given the opportunity to become LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association) qualified and by the end of that same month, I was promoted to become a fully-fledged Fitter for A-Plant’s FLG Services division which specialises in lifting and safety equipment.
Proud to be first ever female fitter
“I’m now very proud to be FLG’s first-ever female Fitter and I’m responsible for the repair and maintenance of a huge range of specialist equipment. I’ve been given some fantastic development opportunities and have completed several training courses, as well as obtaining my Forklift licence. I’ve gone from glitz and glam when I was a hairdresser, to fixing equipment. It feels amazing when you can follow your interests and make it your daily job. I love fixing things!
All the support I could ever want
“I’ve received a great deal of support from all my colleagues and everyone is behind me and wants me to do well. There’s so much to learn and I’m looking forward to completing my Level 2 LEEA qualification and gaining more practical experience before eventually carrying out Level 3.”
It may sound like a cliché but I just love my job. I enjoy fixing things and there’s so much to learn. I get a real buzz from going out on-site and repairing equipment for customers or helping customers to set-up or demonstrating the equipment we are supplying on the hire. I’m very excited about what the future will hold for me at FLG Services!”
